The 4 ships of the Kirov class heavy guided missile cruisers, sometimes referred to as Battle cruisers, were built to combat U.S. Aircraft carriers. In response the Americans re-commissioned the Iowa class battleships.
These ships are nuclear powered, driving steam turbines for a speed of 32 knots. Heavily armed and elegant ships, the fall of communism in Russia led to the mothballing of these ships early in their service lives. Today there are moves to re-commission these ships and only one is in service today, the Pyotr Veliky.
