French RICHELIEU Class Battleships - Availability delayed until further notice

The Richelieu and Jean Bart were the last, largest and most elegant battleships ever built for the French navy, serving well into the 1960s. These ships were designed to counter the Italian Littorio class Battleships being built in the mid to late 1930s, and were essentially scaled up versions of the proceeding Dunkerque class Battlecruisers.

These ships featured 8/15inch guns in 2 quad super firing gun turrets in forward positions, and 3 triple 6 inch gun turrets in aft positions, an aircraft hangar at the stern, and a very unique funnel uptake arrangement abaft of the tower bridge. These ships were fast, manoeuvrable and well-armed, and were very good sea boats. Richelieu and Jean Bart were not fully complete when the Germans over ran France in 1940, and these ships fled to French bases in North Africa. Richelieu first fought against the allies at Dakar, then in 1943 joined the Allies and in 1943 the Richelieu was modernised in New York Navy Yard and commissioned into the Free French Navy, she went on to serve with the British home fleet and then in the Eastern fleet based out of Trincomolee until wars end. Jean Bart had to wait until France had recovered from the war sufficiently for her to be completed, but when she was completed she had the heaviest anti-aircraft armament ever put aboard a battleship. Richelieu and Jean Bart were the last Battleships to serve in Europe, but were eventually scrapped from 1968 – 1970.
